It’s Just Business: What type of worker are you?
“Most people work just hard enough not to get fired and get paid just enough money not to quit.” – George Carlin
What type of worker are you? Do you just do the minimum to keep your job? Do you go above and beyond? I have discussed in previous articles about my three round system to hiring people at my companies. We actually do multiple rounds of interviews to find the person to fill entry-level jobs. I enjoy the interview process, and by the time we get to the last round, the applicant meets with me.
In the past year of using our three round system, we had more than 1,500 people apply for a job. Now out of that 1,500, let’s say that half never even show to the interview or even brings a resume to the physical interview. I am not sure why someone takes the time to fill out an application and never shows for an interview. However, I am guessing that these people are likely on unemployment and are doing the application process to meet the minimum requirements.
I don’t think about those applicants; I focus on the great people that make it to the third round. During the third round I ask the candidates this question: “What is your dream job?” And I will ask you, the reader, have you ever thought about your dream job? When you are in the grind of the rat race at your current job, unhappy about your situation, do you think to yourself, “I wish I could be somewhere else”…? If you want something out of your work life then do it! Your dream can be reality if you change your mindset on how you look at your current situation. If you are just doing the minimum then that is all you will ever have. If you truly want to achieve your dreams, you will have to work hard for that dream to make it a reality.
